It seems that this issue have been going on and on. What funny is, Arsenal are known for it mean defense. A chant of "1 nil to the Arsenal" are not there for no reason. Arsenal always be the hardest team to break. But that not the case few season now.
Dixon recently come out that Arsenal lack of the defender with the quality of the famous back four of Him, Adams, Bould and Winterburn. And after the departure of Campbell really make Arsenal vurnerable on the long ball and set piece. Dixon blame that the famous back four not there long enough to teach the new coming defender how to defend properly.
I totally agreed with Dixon about our defense. But he forget that back four are well protected also by a quality defensive midfielder. During Arsene Wenger reign, Arsenal won when they have Petit, Vieira and Gilberto in midfield. Almost won the title with Flamini playing in that role. I feel there is where the problem lies eventhough not a priority now, but it is worth to be strenghten. Arsenal vs Barcelona. What make the difference? Is it Messi and no Fabregas on the 2nd leg? For me it is not both of them. It is Song taht make a difference. At The Emirates, Messi have a quite game because there is song to stop him. But on the 2nd leg, there is no Song and with Sylvestre as the CB, it really make Messi free to roam.
Whenever Song play, it can be said that Arsenal look less to concede. But who can replace him? Denilson try to fit there but just not decent enough. If we look at the market, who can Arsene Wenger bring to be Song cover? Melo always been mention. Will he make the move to Arsenal ? Another one I like is Gattuso. With high work rate, he will e the catalyst for the team. Barcelona are only better than Arsenal in term of their work rate when they don't have the ball. Arsenal really need someone as the catalyst to drive the team.
Arsenal next season will have major problem with the CB position with only Varmaelen and Djourou left next season. Who can Arsene bring to strenghten this department. I like to see Campbell to sign another extension. He is still able to play at the highest level. A bonus with Campbell is he can be a great mentor for the young up and coming defender. I also like to see Arsene Wenger sign Mexes and Chivu. They are really good defender. And having playing in Italian Serie A where defending really is an art, they will become a good signing. Elegant and experience, they are what Arsenal need now.
For the goalkeeper, I would like to see Sebastian Frey sign for Arsenal. He is a great goalkeeper. Way much better than Almunia and Fabianski. Hopefully Freay will decided to join Arsenal.
Really looking forwar to next season and see who Arsene Wenger will bring to strenghten our squad. But the season is not over yet. Arsenal can still win the title. Go on you Gunners.
